Marfa in ReadyMade

The February/March cover and inside feature of ReadyMade magazine was shot by Stephen Karlisch in Marfa, Texas. The west Texas art mecca is located between the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park.

Marfa is famous for its affiliation with the late minimalist artist, Donald Judd, the mysterious Marfa Lights and as a location for films such as Giant (1956) staring Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean, No Country for Old Men and There will be blood.

Stephen shot the El Cosmico–the most recent brainchild of Austin hotelier Liz Lambert. Liz and her management company are known for The Hotel San Jose and other popular Austin venues. She envisions the 18-acre plot which features five trailers, eco shacks, and a 22 foot Sioux teepee to function as an inclusive “artist playground” fostering a sense of community and creativity. Art shacks will host classes in pottery, songwriting, printmaking and yoga retreats. You’ve never seen a trailer like this before!

Marfa is a city in and the county seat of Presidio County in the high desert of far West Texas in the Southwestern United States. The population was 2,121 at the 2000 census. Marfa was founded in the early 1880s as a railroad water stop, and grew quickly through the 1920s. Marfa Army Airfield was located east of the town during World War II and trained several thousand pilots before closing in 1945 the abandoned site is still visible ten miles east of the city. The base was also used as the training ground for many of the U.S. Army's Chemical mortar battalions.
